Novomatic-owned studio Stakelogic has no doubts about its plans for players, despite a name like Gods of Death. This slot is filled with a spooky atmosphere that we have rarely seen in any of the slots we have tested.
|Volatility||Medium – High|
Gods of Death has a more mature appeal than traditional Egypt-themed slots, with a refreshing element of horror and action.
A gritty design for an epic theme
The first thing that stands out about Gods of Death is the high-quality design. Every detail of the ancient Egyptian temple where you play is carefully tailored to provide an immersive experience that will make you feel like you’re at the gates of the underworld.
The stone steps leading up to the mobile slots are flanked by statues of the gods Anubis and Horus, which are lit up by animated flames. Beyond this, the symbols and the animations are clearly inspired by classic horror films like The Mummy (1998).
There’s just one problem, though. The controls cover some of the artwork, including the face of Horus. This seems trivial, but it does make one wonder: With all the work that went into making this game, did nobody in the development team notice such a big design flaw?
This video slot has some truly interesting symbols. The low-paying royals (10-A) are carved out of stone, displaying colourful dyes and reliefs, complete with cracks and erosion marks.
But what’s really worth looking at are the high-paying symbols, which are intense representations of Egyptian gods that look like action-movie superheroes.
- Anubis (100x): jackal-headed god of death and the afterlife.
- Horus (50x): hawk god of kingship and the sky.
- Sobek (30x): the crocodile, god of power and protection from danger.
- Mummy (30x): pharaoh brought back from the afterlife.
This is not all, though. There are also epic special symbols linked to the bonus features:
- Snake Queen (expanding wild symbol): replaces all other symbols to create winning combinations. When it lands on the third reel, it expands to cover all the rows. Wild paylines pay 200x your bet.
- Pharaoh (scatter symbol): three or more scatter symbols trigger rounds of 10-50 free spins. Scatter wins pay 100x the wager.
- Mummy (free spins expanding wild): during free spins rounds, mummy symbols expand to create wild reels and shake up the mechanics.
Features to die for
Gods of Death has some amazing bonus features that shake up the game. We’re a long way away from more traditional slots like Book of Dead.
Super stake feature
At the beginning of the game, you can choose to play in “Super stake” mode. This will double your bet and enable random bonus spins during the base game, which can see you win additional prizes.
There are two types of bonus spins. The first clears all the low-paying royal symbols from the reels, so that you play with a much higher chance of landing big wins. The second adds 175 wild symbols to the reels, increasing your odds of winning.
The tornado feature may trigger randomly after a losing spin. When this happens, a single reel gets copied onto at least one other reel. This can seriously increase your chances of landing winning combinations, particularly when it involves several reels.
Free spins bonus
If there’s something to be said about the free spins feature, it’s that it is extremely generous. The number of spins per round increases considerably with the more scatter symbols that appear on the reels:
- 3 scatters = 10 free spins
- 4 scatters = 20 free spins
- 5 scatters = 50 free spins
What’s more, two or more scatters during free spins award additional free spins. And again, as their number increases, the total amount of spins goes up considerably, all the way up to 50.
The expanding mummy wild symbol shifts one reel to the left on each subsequent spin, until it disappears. This means that if it lands on the 5th reel, it will stay in play for five spins!
Every time you win, you’ll have the choice to collect the prize or to play a game to increase your winnings by guessing the colour (2x) or the suit (4x) of a blind card.
Theme and design
Ancient Egypt is always a popular slots game theme, but Stakelogic have taken it to a completely new level with this exciting and innovative release.
There’s a slightly ghoulish atmosphere here which is just what you’d expect from a slot called Gods of Death. The imagery is pretty creepy. Watched over by a pair of animal god guards, the setting here is a Pharaoh’s burial chamber. Complementing the impressive visuals is an orchestral backing track that has a hint of Arabia to it. It works very nicely.

Forget everything you know about online slots based on ancient Egypt. Stakelogic’s Gods of Death slot brings together some of the best and most iconic elements of the genre, breathing new life —or rather afterlife!— into this immortal theme.
This is a fast-paced game with relatively high volatility and an RTP of 96%. While the traditional design of 5 reels and 3 rows with just 10 paylines may seem old-fashioned, the slot’s many features provide a high level of excitement to the gameplay. Not to mention the maximum multiplier of 11800x, which can yield payouts of up to £472,000!
