Whenever a new trend appears, slot developers waste no time jumping on the bandwagon. And that’s what Playtech has done with their latest progressive jackpot slot: Age of The Gods Norse: King of Asgard. It’s too bad they didn’t put too much effort into it.

In recent years, Norse history and mythology have become incredibly popular, in great part thanks to the success of the hit TV series Vikings.

And it’s no surprise that Playtech, which already had a whole line of video slots online dedicated to mythology titled Age of the Gods™, should have wanted to capitalise on this new trend. There’s just one problem: King of Asgard adds absolutely nothing new to the genre. It is a lazy attempt to capitalise on a popular theme without much concern for what actually interests players: gaming experience and design.
Of course, the reasons for making the game are understandable. The Age of The Gods™ series has an exclusively Greek theme, with titles like Age of The Gods: King of Olympus, Age of The Gods: Prince of Olympus, Age of The Gods: Goddess of Wisdom or Age of the Gods: God of Storms. As you can see, it’s a series that’s just oozing with creativity. (Not!)
Boring gameplay
The King of Asgard slot game doesn’t have the most exciting gameplay. Its relatively average RTP and medium volatility make it quite mild. The slot’s action is smooth and quiet—so much so that it’s not very exciting, and even the 50 pay lines aren’t enough to make it worth watching spin.
The lack of scatter symbols and free spins is a major letdown.
I will say this, though: the game features and jackpots are promising, and I’d like to see something similar in a more upbeat game.
Bonus features
It struck me that King of Asgard has two different wild symbols: Odin Wild and Loki Wild.
The game plays on the rivalry between the two brothers by interacting when you trigger Odin’s Fury Respins.
During the respins, landing a Loki Wild to the left of an Odin Wild will cause the latter to move over to the right. This increases the chances of getting multipliers all the way to the final respin.

Age of The Gods Norse: King of Asgard has three different jackpots. They are very promising, and they may very well be the most exciting aspect of the game.

Design
There’s nothing wrong with the design of the King of Asgard slot. It’s just that there’s nothing really great about it, either.

The background depicts Valhalla, the great hall of Odin in Asgard. Paylines are drawn out by lightning that evokes the strikes of Thor’s hammer.
The five low-paying symbols are Norse runes, while the high-paying ones are associated with the rival gods Odin and Loki. Aside from the wilds (Odin and Loki), there are three symbols with the two gods:

Age of The Gods Norse: King of Asgard is a lazy cash grab
There’s no getting around it: Age of The Gods Norse: King of Asgard has little reason to exist aside from the growing popularity of Viking-themed slots.
The gameplay is not very exciting. Although smooth, it is monotonous and not very interesting. The one original element is the use of two different wild symbols, Odin Wilds and Loki Wilds, and their interaction during the Odin’s Fury Respins.
Meanwhile, the design relies more on the quality of modern graphics technology than on the concept or on creative artwork.
