Netent presents the Barbarian themed slot Conan based on the 1932 fantasy stories. The developer had announced that it had acquired the rights back in February 2019. This slot casino game is played on a 6×4 play area with 24 paylines and a maximum potential payout of 40,320 coins.
It comes loaded with features including Tower Wilds, Battle Wilds, Mystery symbol, mystery multiplier, the Thoth-Amon Feature, City of Thieves Free Spins, Temple of the Serpent Free Spins and Walls of Tarantia Free Spins.
Conan the Destroyer!
Three characters represent the high payout value symbols, including Conan, the villain-sorcerer Thoth Amon and barbarian Valeria. Next, there are a barbarian helmet, sword and grappling hook. Finally, the three low payout symbols are three crests of a lion, serpent and bird. The artwork is not the best that we’ve seen from Netent, but they are solid. The slot includes cartoon-like animation at different points in the game such as a short scene where Conan does battle with a giant serpent. The soundtrack is superb and helps to builds suspense.
During the main game, Battle Wilds might appear on the last two reels. They have the unique ability to expand horizontally for up to 3 positions.
During the main game, Tower Wilds might appear on the first two reels. They substitute for all symbols outside of the scatter symbol.
During the main game, the first pair, second pair or third pair of reels may lock together in a link to display identical results. During the free spins, it is possible to have all 3 pairs lock with one another.
Mystery Symbol + Multiplier
Again, during the main game, a mystery symbol might appear but this time on the middle two reels (2nd and 3rd). Here they can surface individually or stacked and change into any of the other symbols except for the wilds and scatters. Furthermore, a win multiplier from 3x to 7x is applied if a win is created with the Thoth Amon feature triggered.
If the mystery symbol surfaces fully stacked on a reel, then the Mystery Multiplier in combination with the Tower Wild or Battle Wild triggers the Thoth Amon Feature. In this feature, from 3 to 6 mystery symbols are randomly placed on the second to fifth reels not already occupied by a mystery symbol, scatter symbol or wild.
The slot has an RTP of between 96.01% and 96.65%.
Free Spins: City of Thieves, Temple of the Serpent and Walls of Tarantia
Included in the game is a scatter symbol which can trigger 10, 15, 25 or 50 Free Spins with 3, 4, 5 or 6 symbols during the main game. We are given a choice of one of three modes: City of Thieves, Temple of the Serpent and Walls of Tarantia. Each of these options has different volatility.
City of Thieves (low/medium volatility)
During the City of Thieves, the Tower Wilds may appear on all reels, expanding up/down to partially or fully cover the reels. The only other feature permitted is the linked reels.
Temple of the Serpent Free Spins (medium/high volatility)
During the Temple of the Serpent Free Spins, mystery/stacked symbols may appear on all the reels with the chance of mystery multipliers. The Thoth-Aman is triggered with 5 to 9 mystery symbols which will then contribute 3 to 6 mystery symbols on any of the reels.
The slot is packed with features: 2 wilds, 3 free spins modifiers, mystery symbol with multiplier, Thoth-Amon feature and linked reels.
Walls of Tarantia Free Spins (low/medium volatility)
During the Walls of Tarantia Free Spins, Battle Wilds may appear on all reels. The only other feature permitted is the linked reels.
Conan: Fails to live up to the name
Ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger played the lead role of Conan in the epic fantasy Conan the Barbarian, the name has become somewhat of a cult classic. Unfortunately, the slot bearing his name fails to fully live up to its potential. Considering the generous serving of features, my biggest problem with the slot was the miserly payouts.
After a while, I felt that the features were simply there to extend my playtime and not to help me to win anything exciting. I would have been happy with less volume and more substance, and I would probably suggest that players give this one a miss.
Keeping more or less with the fantasy theme, but although different, I would recommend playing Secret of the Stones from NetEnt.
