The Anderthals slot is the product of a partnership between Just For The Win and Microgaming. As with every other title by Just For The Win, this 3D slot has a cartoonish design meant to appeal to players who like goofy, almost childish visuals. I have to hand it to the developers: they really know their audience. But I should point out that I’m not a member of that select group.
Still, regardless of whether or not you’re into this particular brand of online slot, it’s worth taking a quick look at it, just to keep track of the kind of game we can expect from this developer. In any case, there are hundreds of online slots waiting for you if this one really doesn’t appeal to you.
That said, we’ve looked at the mechanics and features, and it looks like the studio is just recycling and repackaging the same old game with its distinct approach to design.
A prehistoric slot
It’s pretty clear that the title “Anderthals” is taken from “neanderthals”, the species of human that shared the Earth with us in prehistoric times. The game is centered on two characters, a couple of cave dwellers who go by the names of Andy and Annie Anderthal. (Get it? An-neanderthal… it looks like a lot of work went into that one.)
The game is set in a wild where the characters live, building fires and hunting… dinosaurs?
Let’s leave aside the fact that dinosaurs and neanderthals didn’t coexist. In fact, let’s chalk it up to the fact that the game is just trying to take us on an adventure to a fantasy land instead of a real historical setting. But even then, things are still confusing. They are less so in 1 Million Megaways™ BC, another prehistoric-themed slot.
The mountains in the background tower over a hazy pastel colouring that could be either lush treetops or foggy clouds. Either way, it’s not what we’ve come to expect from developers using the latest HTML5 technology to produce mobile slots.
Anderthals slot game features
This highly volatile slot carries a very high risk. The only problem is that the gameplay itself isn’t interesting nor exciting enough to make the risk worthwhile.
That said, Anderthals has some interesting bonus features that add a layer of complexity to the game.
The controls have a very high level of detail, with a bet range of £0.10 to £100. The bet level changes the maximum jackpot, which can go from 2,219x to 11,000x your wager. With a five reel by four row layout, the game makes it possible to land winning combinations across 40 paylines.
Playing with the lowest bet levels can help you manage the risk of the high variance.
The pay symbols themselves are fairly basic. The low-paying symbols are the standard royals (J-A) carved in stone (clubs, hearts, diamonds and spaces). The high-paying symbols are the Annie and Andy characters, plus the Anderthals game logo. Then there’s the Dinosaur expanding wild symbol, which stretches out to fill different numbers of rows on the reel.
The Torch symbol combines with feature spots to provide additional bonuses.
Feature Spots and Feature Symbols
The Feature Spots laid out above the reels apply five random bonuses to each spin. The bonus on each Feature Spot applies to the reel directly below it. When two or more Feature Symbols (torches) land on the reels, they trigger the bonuses displayed on the Feature Spots directly above them.
|Free spins||Triggers free spins round|
|Respins||Activates respin with an expanding wild|
|Wild multiplier||Wild symbols turn into 2x or 3x multipliers|
|Bet multiplier||Awards 1x or 2x the prize|
|Extra Wilds||Adds wild symbols to the reel|
|Expanding Wilds||Wild symbol expands to cover entire reel|
The only problem is that the bonus features are difficult to trigger.
Free spins rounds start off with 8 free spins. If the bonus is re-activated during this round, it awards an extra two spins.
